Walton Charity – A Profile

Walton Charity celebrates 800 years of working in the heart of the local community of Walton-on-Thames. The charity was originally formed from eleven smaller individual charities.

Walton Charity is a responsive charity, working to improve the quality of life and life chances for local disadvantaged people.

We help local people in a number of ways:

Grants for individuals

We prioritise those living in the Charity’s area of benefit, but can also help people living in the Borough of Elmbridge.  We provide:

–        One off help for residents of Elmbridge in times of
crisis or need.

  • Support for vocational and life skills learning and development which can be the first step to becoming job ready or developing general life skills.
  • Grants for children needing support such as school uniform and holiday clubs.

Applicants are asked to complete an application form, which includes details of their personal and financial circumstances, and will also be asked to attend an appointment with the Charity’s Grants Officer.

Community Grants

Our Community Grants programme enables and supports other local organisations to provide a wide range of front line services to the local community.

At a time when demand for many services is increasing and funding for charities is decreasing, we are determined to maximise our resources to benefit our local community.

Since we launched our Community Grant Programme in late 2012 and up to March 2015, 38 grants, with a value of £550,000, have been awarded.Walton Charity also supports and enables local charities and voluntary organisations through training, support and professional advice in key areas such as fundraising, financial management and organisational, strategic and capacity development.

Care home for older people

Sherwood House, situated in Sherwood Drive, Walton on Thames,  is Walton Charity’s residential care home, providing 24-hour care to up to 35 older people in a modern, purpose built home. We provide full care facilities from our professional, highly experienced and dedicated staff. Our service is fully compliant with the Care Quality Commission (CQC – http://www.cqc.org.uk) which is the organisation that inspects and monitors standards of care.

Sometimes older people may need residential care for a short period of time. This may be after a period of illness, or when their usual carer is away. We offer short term respite stays subject to availability.

Many residents call Sherwood House their ‘home from home’. We pride ourselves on our service to residents and aim to offer the highest standards of care in a comfortable and stimulating environment. We offer organised activities, which include outings on our minibus.

For more information please contact use for an informal chat.

Sheltered housing for more independent older people

Walton Charity manages two housing schemes designed for older people – Fenner House and Mayfield. The flats are suitable for both single occupants and couples. Our sheltered housing offers the benefit of independent living to 111 people in our 96 flats, without the various worries that most homeowners or private tenants face.

Fenner House and Mayfield are staffed by a Schemes Manager and two Wardens one of whom will visit each resident daily unless this is not desired or needed. The staff will also provide advice and assistance on a range of topics including welfare benefits. Our support services are tailored to residents’ individual needs and adjusted as those needs change.

Allotments to rent

We have 4 allotment sites with 480 workable allotment plots.  These are
at Terrace Road, Walton; Rydens Road, Walton; Home Farm off Rydens Road, Walton; and Burhill Road, Hersham.

For further information, contact our Allotments Officer, Jane McMahon on 0203 328 0254 or email jmcmahon@waltoncharity.org.uk

Walton & Hersham Foodbank

We are a partner in Walton and Hersham foodbank (part of the national Trussell Trust foodbank network), working alongside St Peter’s Church Hersham and St Mary’s with St John’s Church Walton. Walton Charity employs the part-time manager and provides free office accommodation and meeting space.

There are many reasons why people may need emergency short-term support in the form of a food parcel. These include a delay in benefits, a sudden illness preventing work, or unmanageable debts. Whatever the reason, an emergency food parcel containing food for up to three days for individuals or families experiencing crisis can be provided from one of the foodbank’s distribution centres.

People must be referred to the foodbank by a recognised agency who will issue them with a foodbank voucher.
